DANCING IN THE STREETS

Rockridge Street Fair

My husband Fred was helping me take down signs on our way home from my Sunday open house at 415 63rd Street www.415-63rd.com in Rockridge.  Suddenly we found ourselves in the middle of a party…

User-friendly Rockridge retail district had moved to the middle – middle of the street, that is. Independently-owned stores, restaurants and local groups hosted the entire neighborhood during a street fair Sunday, October 9.  We were instantly drawn into the festivities.

Delicious food and drinks were ours to sample as we walked along College Avenue, from Alcatraz all the way up to Manila Avenue. Our favorite highlights included young circus arts performers and the wellness area, where you could get a massage. We loved the music and festive atmosphere.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Posted in EVENTS, OAKLAND on August 4, 2011 by Julie Nachtwey, the Claremont Hills Real Estate Expert

Know Your Neighbors

You never know when neighbors may need your help…or you may need theirs.

During National Night Out festivities Tuesday night, the action was centered in a garage and driveway on West View Drive in the Claremont Hills. That’s where I spent a good part of the evening – sharing food and conversation with neighbors new and old, admiring the adorable children and petting loyal dogs. www2.oaklandnet.com/nno

Similar events were held in cities across the country as a way to bring people together as part of a grassroots crime-prevention effort. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inoakland/detail?entry_id=94605 Police say perhaps the single most important way to stay safe is to know your neighbors. National Night Out began 28 years ago to build community awareness. It was launched by the nonprofit National Association of Town Watch. www.nationaltownwatch.org/natw/

She’s Got You Covered

My heart sank that day when a visitor sat on the arm of my antique sofa.  The arm hung down, broken and useless. I thought it was the end…but there was hope !  My friend, Katie Bovie, an Objects Conservator at Alpha Furniture Restoration ktmbovie@aol.com 510.658.8579 recommended the best person to fix it.  That was my lucky day.

Marni Meister is the sole proprietor of a custom upholstery business in Oakland, California.  She can be reached at 510.520.6030 or MStudio.Upholstery@gmail.com

Marni’s love of antiques spurred her interested in upholstery. After apprenticing with an upholsterer, she opened her own business in 2000 and named it “M Studio.” She specializes in furniture reupholstery and custom sewing for the home. Marni always carries a large selection upholstery fabrics. That’s how I found the gorgeous teal
fabric which she suggested to cover not just the repaired sofa, but the matching chair as well. Marni attended school in NYC and studied Fine Arts. She has a BFA in sculpture.

Marni is also a long time volunteer with a greyhound rescue and adoption group, “Greyhound Friends For Life” greyhoundfriendsforlife.org  “After adopting my first retired racing greyhound, Reggie, I became passionate about helping this sweet, docile breed find loving homes.” said Marni.

Marni has a heart of gold – and an eye to match.
