Help Stop Hunger

One Can at a Time

Neighbors are invited to join other neighbors in the new Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project www.berkeleyfoodproject.org   It’s as easy as one-two-three-four!

(1)   Each time you shop, buy an extra item of non-perishable food.

(2)   Store this food in a designated green re-useable grocery bag.

(3)   Your neighborhood coordinator will exchange your filled bag for an empty bag.

(4)   Neighborhood coordinators will collect the bags every two months.

Then the filled bags of food will be delivered to the Berkeley Food Pantry www.berkeleyfoodpantry.vpweb.com

“My husband makes hummus and often uses canned beans,” said Anne Wagley.  “He simply buys a few extra cans to put in the green bag for our Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project.”

Anne is ready to sign up folks in her neighborhood to participate, contact Anne wagley@mac.com

Becoming a community coordinator is also a great way to better know your neighbors.

FYI The Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project is modeled after a very successful program in Ashland, Oregon.

“In Ashland, the volunteering took off and spread…” said Jackie Levin. “Now they’re collecting tons –- yes tons –- of food.”  Even though she lives in Oakland, Jackie is a regular volunteer with the Berkeley Food Pantry. Questions? Feel free to email her: jackie_levin@hotmail.com “I’m excited about this and…ready to go.”

“DUST BOWL TROUBADOUR”

Friends and neighbors,

You may be interested in the current show at Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage about Wood Guthrie.

“Wood Guthrie’s American Song” is based on the life and music of this most famous folk singer.
The show runs through Sun July 22. For more details visit www.freightandsalvage.org

Fred & I saw the award-wining show in a packed crowd last Saturday – Guthrie’s 100th Birthday. There was even a birthday cake. The show is outstanding…talk about the 99%. The music of course is wonderful. When the cast sang “This Land is Your Land…” the audience joined in with gusto.
