Berkeley Firefighters – Service Before Self

FIRESTORM 1991

The Oakland Firestorm 1991 was a catastrophic wildland-urban interface conflagration that occurred October 19-20 on the hillsides of North Oakland/Southeast Berkeley. It was contained October 23. At least 25 people were killed and 3,500 homes destroyed.

Berkeley fireman Owen Sims grew up in Berkeley and graduated from Berkeley High. He was nine years old at the time of the 1991 Firestorm.
“As Firefighters, we are constantly interfacing with people who need more help than can be addressed during a 15-minute 911 Response,” explained Sims.

BERKELEY FIREFIGHTERS RANDOM ACTS or BFRA is a non-profit organization he has teamed up with. Their goal is to raise funds to help people in need or at risk.

DAVID LANCE GOINES, a local artist and printmaker, is creating a Berkeley Firefighters poster to benefit BFRA causes. He will print 1,000 posters. They’re available to order for $40 each.
