New Charter School in West Oakland

The new library at the fledgling St. Vincent Academy in West Oakland needed what most libraries take for granted – books. So Jean Driscoll put the word out. Our dear friend and neighbor, Claudine Torfs, was one of many folks to donate. Among her generous selections were Harold and the Purple Crayon and Blueberries for Sal.

First Day of School

“Dear friends of Vincent Academy,

“Our school opened on Monday for 64 wonderful children! It’s terrific to see them all in their classrooms and on the playground, getting to know their teachers and each other, and settling into the routines of the school.

“We are now open from 7 am to 6 pm daily, with the actual school day running from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The school day is filled with a terrific academic and arts program.  Most of our students are enrolled in the after-school program, through which they receive additional instruction in art, music, and martial arts, and will be offered academic support as the year progresses.  We’re providing healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks through Revolution Foods.

“It has been a long time coming — and thanks to each of you for helping make this a reality!  We hope you will visit the school soon. If you would like to come, just let me know.

“Thanks again, Jean
